The study, which measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2007 model year) vehicles, said that Porsche was the highest-ranking brand with 110 problems per 100 vehicles followed by Lincoln (114 problems) and Buick (115 problems).

J.D. Power & Associates' latest vehicle dependability study says most cars are getting better. In fact, J.D. Power tests showed that 25 of 36 brands (69%) improved their long-term durability. Reported problems decreased from an industry average of 167 per 100 vehicles last year to the current 155 (+7% in reliability).

The Cadillac DTS is the model with the fewest problems in the industry, with just 76 issues per 100 vehicles. This marks the first time in more than a decade that a model from a domestic automaker has achieved the lowest PP100 score in the Vehicle Dependability Study.

Interestingly, seven of the 10 models with the lowest incidence of problems in the industry are from Ford and General Motors, including the 2007 model-year Buick Lacrosse, Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, Ford Five Hundred, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan, and Mercury Montego.

The biggest losers in terms of increases in problems per 100 vehicles are: Land Rover (+27), Audi (+25), Mitsubishi (+20).

The brands with the most problems per 100 vehicles in the industry are: Volkswagen (255), Suzuki (253) and Land Rover (255).

A major problem in GM's planning is Russia, which was predicted to overtake Germany as the largest European market in the near future. Automotive sales in the Russian market plummeted by 50% last year to 1.45 million in 2009.

Autofacts, a division of PriceWatwerhouseCoopers, explains, "The financial crisis has underlined many structural weaknesses that will likely impact the future trajectory of the market."

new Chevrolet's Sales Across the Pond Fall Flat

Here's what the analysts have to say:

Walt Madeira (CSM Worldwide):
"I would think 425,000 this year is going to be difficult. Anything above 375,000 I would say is very good, but they will be hard-pressed to do even that. Long term, I would say 600,000 by 2015 or 2016 is more likely."

"The [Russian] scrapping program is aimed to help Russian manufacturers like Lada. Chevrolet's sales projections assume a recovery in Russia. If it was a three million market, they might end up selling 300,000 or 350,000 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Russia doesn't look like it's recovering as fast as China, Brazil or India."

Professor Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer (Center for Automotive Research, University of Duisberg-Essen):
"Do they have better models? No way because VW, Nissan-Renault, Kia-Hyundai, Fiat and many others have far better sales. Do they have a specific advantage in technology? It's just GM. Do they have better cost structures? No way...In a few years Chinese brands like BYD and Geely will be in Europe. They will increase sales by chasing Chevy drivers. The brand is very weak."

Jonathon Poskitt (J.D. Power and Associates):
"As Russia does make progress, Chevrolet will, of course, benefit from its significant presence there. There is room for Chevrolet to increase brand awareness in Europe and it will be helped by building on a solid portfolio of models and by entering new segments...I see Chevrolet competing more with the likes of Hyundai/Kia, Fiat, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, etc. than Opel."

Chevrolet's European range currently includes the new Spark city car, the Aveo supermini, the subcompact Lacetti, the Epica sedan, the Captiva SUV and the new Cruze sedan.

Within the next two years, GM will enhance the firm's line-up with the next-generation Aveo, the Orlando MPV and the Camaro which will be Chevy's halo car.

The 12C (as they refer to it) packs a mid-mounted 3.8 liter V8, developed in-house by McLaren. Thanks to the twin turbos, it develops 600-horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

According to the McLaren, the supercar is capable of reaching 100km/h (62mph) in less than 3,0 seconds and 200 km/h (124mph) in under 10 seconds while completing the quarter mile in around 11 seconds and reaching a top speed in excess of 200mph or 322km/h.

In comparison, the Ferrari 458 Italia hits the 100km/h marque in 3.4 seconds and achieves a top sped of 325km/h (202 mph) while the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 goes from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 sec and to 200km/h in 11.8 sec, and tops out at 325 km/h (202 mph).

While we'll have to wait until later this year for a lock on pricing (McLaren is claiming a range of £125,000-175,000), company reps had this to say about the future 911-fighter's litheness:

"Reducing weight is an obsession at McLaren...Recent developments have lowered the MonoCell's [the one-piece moulded carbon-fibre chassis] weight further to below 80 kg, whilst continued lightweight engineering supports McLaren Automotive's plans to launch the 12C at a lighter dry weight than any competitor at around 1,300 kg [2,867 lbs]."

Just to get the point across, McLaren was kind enough to list the other ways their car is slimmer than anyone else's:

* Standard composite brake system of forged aluminium and cast iron is lighter than the optional carbon-ceramic brake system, saving five kilos
* Low-weight Lithium-Ion battery saves 10kgs
* Lightweight magnesium structural beam supports the dashboard
* Small, twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivers 600PS from 3.8-litre capacity
* Rear mounted engine cooling radiators minimize the pipework, the fluids contained within them, and therefore weight. They were also mounted in car line to minimize vehicle width and weight.
* Hexagonal aluminium wiring saves four kilos over circular wiring.

When the extremely light, high-output, and supercar fast MP4-12C goes on sale next year, it will be at unique McLaren dealerships in 19 countries around the world.

Until then, enjoy the comprehensive photo gallery of the new McLaren that includes shots from this week's presentation.
Set to be let loose upon the public come Spring 2011, McLaren Automotive's MP4-12C has a lot to live up to. In order to make sure attention hasn't been waning, McLaren recently had the car's public unveiling at its HQ in Woking, England, where the maker released more details on the MP4-12C including the supercar's performance stats.

The estate will use the same engine line-up as the five-door hatch, which means a petrol range stretching from a 1.4-liter naturally aspirated four-pot up to a 180 horsepower 1.6-liter turbo, and a comprehensive diesel range that tops out with a 160HP 2.0-liter CDTi.

The Opel (Vauxhall in Britain) should arrive in European showrooms towards the end of summer.

he Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including Traction Control (TC) is also fitted as standard across the range offering a high level of active safety. The ESC yaw sensor in the centre of the car detects movement around the vertical axis, and a sensor on the steering column measures the steering angle being applied. Inputs from these sources are then correlated with the speed of the car. The system is programmed to execute whatever actions will most effectively prevent the onset of a loss of control. Depending upon the driving situation, it is possible for braking to be applied via the ESC system to one, two or three wheels at once, or, if necessary, the electronic throttle opening is also reduced.

Other braking functions under ESC direction are:

* Cornering Brake Control (CBC) is activated when the car is braking while cornering. Brake pressure is individually varied between all four wheels in order to keep the car perfectly stable.
* Cornering Torque Control (CTC) prevents the inner wheel from slipping when cornering under acceleration. If wheel speed sensors detect the onset of any slippage, the inner wheel is slowed by applying brake pressure, thereby minimising any understeer tendency. As soon as grip is restored, the braking pressure is released.
* Electronic Drag Torque Control (EDC) prevents loss of grip if the driver steps off the throttle or downshifts too quickly.
* Brake Assist System (BAS) is designed to provide the driver with additional braking assistance in an emergency situation.
* Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist (HBFA) automatically raises braking pressure to compensate for brake fade under repeated applications of heavy braking.
* Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) is active when a Vauxhall-approved towing hitch is fitted. TSC counters any vehicle instability that may occur when towing a trailer or caravan by reducing the engine torque and applying brake pressure to selected wheels. ESC engages TSC when any oscillation from the attached trailer is transferred over the hitch point to the vehicle and detected as sufficient to cause instability.

SAFETY, INNOVATION & EQUIPMENT

Vauxhall has played a pioneering role in automotive lighting technology in recent years and its Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) is now in its third generation. However, the new Vauxhall Astra will be the first compact class Vauxhall to adopt this (optional) feature, illustrating the premium nature of the car, albeit at Vauxhall’s traditional value price point.

With multi-xenon headlamps, AFL+ can be specified on all new Astras, except S and Exclusiv models, as part of a Premium Forward Lighting Pack. This also includes High Beam Assist, automatic headlight-beam switching, LED daytime running lights and headlamp washers.

AFL+ includes two new functions – Town Light and Adverse Weather Light – and two improved functions – Highway Light and Country Road Light. There are a total of nine functions, each automatically engaged to suit prevailing road profiles and driving conditions:

* Dynamic Curve Light – Illuminates surface around bends; linked with Sport switch in FlexRide
* Country Road Light – Provides brighter and wider illumination of both sides of the roa
* Static Cornering Light – Illuminates area up to 90 degrees to the left and right of car to aid low speed manoeuvres
* Highway Light – Automatically engages at over 60mph to provide a more intense and higher-level main beam
* Town Light – Operates between 20 and 35mph to provide a broader, less intense beam to help drivers see pedestrians at either side of the road
* Pedestrian Area Light – Activated at speeds up to 20mph in areas where drivers must exercise extreme caution, such as pedestrian areas
* Adverse Weather Light – Activated during rain or snow, the left headlamp increases in intensity to pick out lane markers, while the right beam intensity reduces from 35 to 32 Watt’s to avoid blinding oncoming drivers
* High Beam Light – Provides maximum headlight beam and range, with output increasing from 35 to 38 Watt’s
* Automatic headlight beam switching – senses the headlights from oncoming cars and activates dipped/full beam accordingly

Occupant safety

Occupant safety has played a major role in the new Vauxhall Astra’s development, and a comprehensive set of active and passive safety systems are standard an all models.

All Vauxhall Astra variants are fitted with dual-front seat belt pre-tensioners, which provide over the shoulder and across the occupant’s lap. They are pyrotechnically activated to restrain forward body movement in the event of a severe impact.

Other standard safety equipment includes two front airbags, two side airbags and a pair of roof rail-mounted airbags that cover the entire glass area between the A- and C-pillars. Three, three-point seatbelts are provided for rear seat passengers, and the front passenger-side airbag can be de-activated if the seat is occupied by a rear-facing child seat.

Whenever the airbags and pre-tensioners are deployed, a series of additional safety features is activated: the hazard warning lights come on; all doors unlock; the interior lights illuminate; and the heating/ventilation fan and fuel pump are both switched off.

The latest generation active head restraints, developed from those on the Insignia, are fitted as standard to all models, and provide enhanced protection from whiplash injuries if the car suffers a rear-end impact.

Other occupant safety features include:

* Seatbelt reminder – with audible warning. Operates on all five seating positionFront seat frames – with ramps to restrict occupant movement in a frontal impact
* Enhanced Pedal Release System (PRS) – in heavy frontal impacts, clutch and brake pedals are de-coupled to prevent foot and lower leg injuries
* ISOFIX child seat mounts for the outer rear seats, plus seatback-mounted top tether brackets for all rear seating positions
* Height-adjustable rear head restraints (optional for centre position)
* Adaptive brake lights – warn drivers behind by pulsing five times per second if the ABS is engaged above 20mph.

Seat Technology

Vauxhall’s target was to produce best-in-class seating for the new Astra, with special attention paid to comfort, position, range and protection during an accident.

The front seats offer the industry’s best range of adjustment, with fore and aft movement extending to 280mm. The driver’s seat is also adjustable for height by up to 65mm and the steering wheel can also be adjusted for reach and rake, ensuring that drivers of virtually all shapes and sizes will feel comfortable and in control.

Apart from excellent comfort and support, the new Vauxhall Astra’s seats also provide a high level of safety, featuring the latest generation of active head restraints which offer protection against whiplash injuries. High strength steel in the seat frames increases rigidity, but reduces weight, saving up to three kilograms per car.

Shields in the front backrests provide protection against objects from the luggage compartment flying through the cabin, especially if the rear seat is folded down during a rear impact.

The Ergonomic Sports Seats are offered as an option across all trim levels, with either manual or powered lumbar support. The driver’s seat features a six-way adjustment, a four-way adjustment of the lumbar support and an extendable seat cushion.

On SE and SRi models, the Ergonomic Sports Seats are available in leather, together with heating for the front seats. On Elite models, both these features are standard.

Flex-Fix integrated bike carrier

A unique feature in the sector is Vauxhall’s innovative Flex-Fix bike carrier, which will be available as an option across the new Astra range in the near future.

The system, which is integrated with the car’s rear bumper, makes transporting bikes easy and convenient, while eliminating the need to fit a rack on the car’s tow hitch, or lift bikes on to a roof rack.

The FlexFix carrier can accommodate up to two bikes and slides out from the rear bumper like a drawer when a release lever near the boot’s lip is pulled. Maximum weight capacity is 40kgs, and it can accept bikes with wheel sizes up to 28 inches. No fixing tools or special parts are required and, when not in use, FlexFix is pushed back to stow almost invisibly behind the bumper.

FlexFloor – the moveable boot floor

Vauxhall’s FlexFloor, available as an option on S and Exclusiv Astras and standard on all other models, is an adaptable stowage system for a wide range of cargo, from shopping bags to large boxes.

The boot floor is moveable and can be positioned at three levels by engaging ergonomically designed fixing channels near each corner of the boot.

In its highest position, FlexFloor brings the height of the boot floor up to bumper level, making it easy to load and slide in heavy items with minimal effort. In this mode, the system provides a hidden storage compartment beneath the temporary floor.

With FlexFloor in its middle position, the boot floor aligns with the height of the folded rear seat backs, providing a flat-bed cargo area. Underneath, a smaller stowage area is still available for slimmer items, such as clothing and shoes.

In its lowest position, FlexFloor is positioned directly above the boot floor.

Report:C8 to go Radical with Mid-Mounted V6, Corvette C7 to Receive Heavy Redesign
While the Corvette C7 will essentially be a reskinned version of the current generation C6 with the emphasis said to be on interior quality and making the exterior styling more desirable to younger buyers in the States as well as to a broader international crowd, the C8 will ground-breaking, to say the least, if we are to believe the report.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about General Motors' plans for the new Corvette, dubbed C7, that will hit the market by 2012. Now, Autoweek is bringing news on the for the next major model change, the C8, that's expected to be released after 2016.

"That [the C7] will be the last of the traditional, old-style Corvettes," said an unnamed senior GM insider to AutoWeek.

The C8, which would have been the C7 if GM hadn't entered bankruptcy last year, is said to ditch the Corvette's trademark front-mounted, large-displacement V8 setup that has been used in all six generations (though the C1 was also offered with a six-cylinder unit) for a mid-engine layout with a turbocharged V6 powertrain.

The report adds that the C8 will also boast a lightweight alloy body and a more compact footprint.

The question we pose here is this: if the report turns out to be true, and taking into consideration the introduction of the new Camaro with its old-school muscle car charm, is GM's move to turn the page on the Corvette in the right direction?
